Olympiad Memorial Award

(Edith, Louis and Max S. Millen Memorial Education Grant)

Originating at the Department (State) level, JWV of the USA sponsors an annual XX Olympiad Memorial Award. It is totally NON-SECTARIAN, with the sole criteria that the applicant be a High School Senior. The applicant must show evidence of accomplishments within the Olympic spirit, namely excellences in all endeavors, sportsmanship and friendship. The award is weighted towards achievements in sports.

The award memorializes the murder of 11 Israeli athletes (one an American citizen) at the hands of Palestinian terrorists at the XX Olympics in Munich, Germany in September of 1972. Very likely, it is the only award given in memory of a terrorist event in this country.

JWV's XX Olympiad Memorial Award, honoring the memory of the eleven members of the Israeli Olympic team assassinated at the XX Olympiad in Munich, Germany, is a community relation's award given to high school seniors who exhibit outstanding athletic achievement. A winner is selected by members of the JWV XX Olympiad committee at our National Convention in August, and receives a cash award of $1000. The National Award has been renamed the Edith, Louis and Max S. Millen Memorial Educational Grant.
