THE SHUTTLE COLUMBIA DISASTER

Summer 2003

The Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV) mourns the terribly tragic deaths of the seven Columbia astronauts. National Commander Daniel Weiss, speaking on behalf of all the members of JWV, expressed the national veterans' service organization's condolences to the families of each of the seven Columbia astronauts. "At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with each of you, the families and close personal friends of these brave Columbia astronauts." We of JWV pledge to carry on the superb example of these seven dedicated, highly capable and talented men and women, leaders in both the military and the worlds of science and medicine. Colonel Ilan Ramon was, of course, of very special interest to the Jewish War Veterans. Although from a foreign nation, Colonel Ramon is a Jew and the son of a Holocaust survivor and an Israeli Freedom Fighter. Colonel Ramon was one of the Air Force pilots who bombed and destroyed the Iraqi nuclear reactor in the 1980's, thus setting back Iraq's deadly weapons program of mass destruction and preventing Saddam Hussein from using a nuclear capability in the Gulf War. Ilan Ramon was Israel's first astronaut. NC Daniel Weiss stated, "To me, February 1st shall always be a day of sorrow, I will remember this tragic event as long as I live.
