STATEMENT OF THE NATIONAL COMMANDER REGARDING ACTIONS BY SYRIA WITH REGARD TO DEPOSED IRAQI LEADERS

Winter 2003

Daniel Weiss, National Commander of the Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV), issued the following statement criticizing reports that the government of Syria is harboring deposed Iraqi leaders of the Hussein regime: "The world shouldn't be surprised that that the Syrian government is providing safe harbor for members of the Iraqi government. After all, it is a terrorist nation, and as such, sees no problem in providing safety to other practitioners of terror and repression. Along with Saudi Arabia, Syria supports and trains countless numbers of terrorists, whose sole purpose is to destroy American lives and property and those of her allies, most notably Israel. The Assad government in Syria has time-and-time again ignored the demands of the United States and her allies to immediately end the safe harbor it provides for these murderers. The Jewish War Veterans supports any and all efforts by President Bush to ensure the safety of our citizens and to bring to justice the despots of the deposed Iraqi regime. It echoes the President's warnings to the Syrian government about the consequences of continuing to harbor terrorists and supports world pressure on the Assad government to turn over Saddam Hussein (if he is still alive), and any members of his Ba'ath party who have fled to the country. Syria has always been a threat to the stability of the Middle East, and it is imperative that this nation makes known its continued anger over Syrian support for Al Queda, Hezbollah and other terrorist groups. Our patience has worn out, and Syria is warned against provoking the United States as it pursues justice against those who have declared war against this nation and her citizens.
