Rep. Bilirakis to receive JWV Medal of Merit for Work on Behalf of Veterans

Summer 2002

Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV) National Commander Bernard Becker has announced that the 2002 JWV Medal of Merit will be presented to Rep. Mike Bilirakis (R-FL) for his efforts in Congress on behalf of America's veterans. The presentation of the Medal will be made by NC Becker at an evening reception on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, March 6, 2002. The reception will precede Commander Becker's testimony before the Joint House-Senate Veteran's Affairs Committee on Thursday, March 7th. His testimony will outline JWV's positions and goals on a wide array of veteran's issues in the era of America's war on terrorism. "Mike Bilirakis has understood from the start the importance of America's commitment to her veterans," Mr. Becker said. "As we face this new enemy and a war of uncertain duration, it is more important than ever that we have representatives like him carrying the fight on our behalf in Congress. His efforts will affect not only the veterans of today, but those who are even now striving to protect us in lonely and dangerous places across the world." "In his years on Capitol Hill, Mike Bilirakis has worked to protect Social Security, Medicare and federal retirement programs; expand access to quality health care; promote disease research, improve education; strengthen our national defense, ensure congressional accountability; and support a balanced federal budget," Mr. Becker noted. "He is certainly a worthy recipient of the Medal of Merit."
