JWV Supports Pre-Emptive Strikes against Iraq while opposing deployment of American Forces

Spring 2002

General Richard B. Myers, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the recent JWV National Convention of the exigency to neutralize Iraq with its demonstrated ability to produce and use weapons of mass destruction and of America's right to undertake a pre-emptive strike in addition to deterrence in circumvention of such use. The Jewish War Veterans strongly supports such a solution; but discounts and opposes the need for an invasion of Iraq or the deployment of American ground forces into such a venture. Saddam Hussein has shown his total indifference for life and had no hesitancy in the use of such weaponry against the Kurds and the Iranians. He has blatantly and intentionally violated all of his agreements and sanctions, all of which continue to constitute a firm basis for moving against Iraq without the need for further authorization. Hussein is unconstrained in his development and use of such weaponry. JWV believes that there is no requirement for a ground engagement of the Iraqi terrorist forces. Intelligence can specifically target the sites where creation, development and production of weapons of mass destruction are taking place. Sophisticated weaponry such as laser directed missiles; cave destroying bombing and other techniques can seek to eliminate the development and the production of such capability. As to those who say that our intelligence is not capable of a proof beyond a reasonable doubt as to such an endeavor; then, if that be the case, American troops should definitely not be thrown indiscriminately into what could be a cesspool of death in Iraq or in any other "Allied" designated area. The destruction of terrorism should be our primary goal.
