JWV Supports Boxer-Snowe Amendment to Expand POW Eligibility

Summer 2006

The Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV) supports the Boxer-Snowe Amendment to the Senate Defense Authorization Bill and applauds the Senate for its passage. The Amendment would require the President to submit to Congress a determination as to whether all prisoners of war should be eligible for the Purple Heart. Under current rules, only prisoners of war who die during their captivity as a result of wounds inflicted directly by the enemy are eligible for the Purple Heart. However, those who die of other causes related to their imprisonment are not eligible. All prisoners of war who die in captivity have given their lives for their country as a result, direct or indirect, of their captivity and the circumstances in which they are imprisoned. It is imperative that all who give their lives for the freedom of their fellow countrymen be so honored. The JWV is proud to support this important piece of legislation and hope that the President will act quickly to make a determination of the eligibility of all who have suffered and died as prisoners to protect the rights that we enjoy today.
