JWV Protests Proposed Spending Cuts

February 2011

While the Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV) acknowledges that the growth in the Federal deficit must lead to government spending cuts, those cuts must not be made on the backs of our veterans, who have risked their lives and futures for the defense of this country.

Therefore, the JWV is alarmed that the list of spending cuts proposed by Representative Michele Bachmann (R-MN), an influential member of the Republican Congress, includes cuts that would severely impact our veterans. They should not have to bear these cuts at a time when our veteran population is seeing an upsurge in the need to care for our brave young men and women facing grave injuries from their service in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Congresswoman Bachmann is proposing to cap increases in VA health care spending and reduce disability compensation to account for Social Security Disability payments. She is also proposing severe cuts in federal job training programs that would have serious consequences for those veterans attempting to reenter the job market after having to face physical challenges and breaks in their work history.

The issue of the deficit must be addressed, but our veterans should not be the ones to suffer for the overspending of government. Our veterans should instead receive all of the benefits that they deserve and that they have earned along with the thanks of a grateful nation.
