JWV Opposes Sale of Hi-Tech Arms to Saudi Arabia as an Abomination

Winter 2008

The Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV) strongly opposes the recently proposed sale of 900 Joint Direct Attack Munitions to Saudi Arabia.

While the Administration agreed to sell Saudi Arabia sophisticated arms as part of its efforts to contain the threat posed by Iran, and the guidance systems will supposedly be programmed not to include U.S. bases in Iraq and Israel as targets, it is important that such hi-tech equipment not fall into the hands of the government of Saudi Arabia, a sworn enemy of Israel and a nation which has called the Iraqi War illegal.

The stability of the Saudi government is shrouded in secrecy, and we have no way of knowing if the components that would keep any nation from being a target can be overridden by those within or outside of the government into whose hands these weapons might fall. It is always important to remember that most of the 9/11 hijackers, as well as Osama bin Laden, came from Saudi Arabia, and much terrorist funding came from the Saudis.

We support the efforts of Reps. Robert Wexler (D-FL) and Anthony Weiner (D-NY) to block this planned sale. America must not allow such sophisticated hi-tech weaponry to fall into the hands of those who may allow it to fall into the wrong hands.

We urge the elimination of this ill-conceived plan. While Iran remains a threat to the stability of the region, arming Saudi Arabia, a country that might allow such weaponry intentionally or unintentionally to fall into the hands of the enemies of both Israel and the United States, is too great a gamble to take.
