JWV Opposes Current Contractors for WWII Memorial in Washington

The Jewish War Veterans of the USA have announced their opposition to the selection of Tompkins Builders as one of the contractors on the National World War II Memorial to be built on The Mall in Washington, DC. The announcement was made by JWV National Commander Ron Ziegler. "We recognize that this is not a black and white issue," Commander Ziegler said. "We know Tompkins Builders has been a part of the Washington, DC business community since 1911. But since 1979 the company that now owns Tompkins has been owned by the Philipp Holzmann Company, a German construction firm. That firm used US prisoners as slave labor in World War II! Perhaps they had the money to buy American companies because they didn't have to pay their workers in the War. Regardless, JWV does not find it appropriate that they profit back in Germany for being involved with this project, a memorial to a war Germany created to the horror of the civilized world."

The Jewish War Veterans of the USA works to combat anti-Semitism and bigotry. JWV supports American youth through scouting, scholarships and anti-drug programs. The organization supports strong U.S.-Israeli relations by sponsoring two Allied Veterans' Missions to Israel each year. JWV is dedicated to America's veterans. Through its hospital, rehabilitation and veterans' service programs, JWV assists the Veterans' Service Offices in major cities throughout the country. JWV supports the underprivileged, homeless, and handicapped of our nation through a variety of civic betterment projects, including low-cost, federally subsidized senior citizens housing.
