JWV ENDORSES PROPOSED CHANGE OF TROOP STRUCTURE

Winter 2003

The Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV) strongly endorses the recent proposal by General James L. Jones, the newly appointed supreme commander of U. S. forces in Europe, to change the structure of U.S. troops in Europe. According to Congressional sources, General Jones envisions troops deployed in Europe on a rotational basis, with equipment stored in advance and troops able to be deployed quickly in and out of the region as they are needed. Such a plan, currently in its preliminary phase of development, would be major change in the structure of U.S. forces in Europe that has been in place since the end of World War II. The JWV agrees that a flexible troop deployment, such as that proposed by General Jones, would create a more agile, effective, and less vulnerable military presence in Europe than is possible under the current more permanent base structure. The JWV urges Defense Secretary Rumsfeld to give this recommendation urgent consideration so that it may be implemented as soon as possible.
