JWV Demands Investigation of “Christian Embassys” Influence in the Pentagon

Winter 2006

The Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV) supports the call for an investigation of a video shot within the Pentagon and featuring seven military officers in uniform endorsing an evangelical Christian organization, the "Christian Embassy." As we stated in a previous release condemning religious intolerance and proselytizing at the U.S. Air Force Academy: Freedom of religion and race is a cornerstone of our democracy. Throughout our history, people of all ethnic and religious backgrounds, have answered the call to serve in the military. It is therefore of paramount importance that those who will lead our troops, the graduates of all of our military academies, respect the cultural diversity of our society. In the same way, it is a violation of these principles and of the separation of Church and State for an organization that advocates one point of view, that of evangelical Christianity, be given permission to shoot a promotional video in the Pentagon itself, featuring high-ranking officers in uniform. Both the shooting of the video on government property and the appearance of the military officers in uniform are clear violations of the law and should be punished. Groups like the "Christian Embassy," which attempt to allow the religious views of evangelical Christians to take precedence over those of other religious groups, and which violate the separation of Church and State must not continue to undermine this most important underpinning of our democracy. Those who have allowed a group that fosters one religious viewpoint over another to use the very halls of our Pentagon to promote their agenda must not be allowed to continue. Those who helped them to do this must face the consequences.
