JWV Celebrates 110th Annual National Convention in San Diego, California

Summer 2005

The Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV) is proud to announce that beautiful San Diego, California, will be the site of its 110th Annual National Convention, August 14-21, 2005. JWV, the oldest active veterans' organization in the country, was founded by Civil War veterans in 1896, and has held annual conventions since the year of its founding. In a long tradition of service and patriotism, JWV is proud to support America's veterans through hospital, rehabilitation, and veterans' service programs and to uphold and celebrate the service that American Jewry has given to the defense of our country throughout the 350 years of Jewish life in America that we celebrate this year. Delegates to our upcoming convention, to be held at the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley hotel, will have a full week of activities during their stay. Monday, August 15, will be a day to enjoy the sights and legendary weather for which San Diego is so famous. Our delegates will enjoy both a guided trolley tour of the city and an amphibious tour of the Bay itself. On Tuesday, August 16, 2005, the day will begin by honoring those veterans who have served their country throughout its history by laying a wreathe on the grounds of the Veterans Museum and Memorial Center. The Museum, which houses a display from the JWV's National Museum of American Jewish Military History and memorabilia from JWV posts in the San Diego area, is a fitting place to hold such a ceremony. The work of the convention begins in earnest on Tuesday, August 16, 2005, with the semiannual meeting of the JWV National Executive Committee. Wednesday, August 17, 2005, features the grand opening of the convention. Our keynote speaker for the grand opening will be Congressman Bob Filner (D-CA). Following the grand opening, our delegates will hear from Rabbi Arnold Resnicoff, who has recently been appointed as Special Assistant to the Secretary and Chief of Staff of the Air Force for Values and Vision. Rabbi Resnicoff's presentation will be followed by a panel discussion on the Israeli disengagement process featuring, Maj. General (Ret.) Ran Goren, the head of TZEVET, the IDF veterans organization; Maj. General Roger Brautigan of the California Department of Veterans Affairs, who was a recent participant in the JWV's Allied Veterans Mission to Israel; and Dr. Sanford Lakoff, Research Professor of Political Science at the University of California, San Diego, and a renowned authority on the people and politics of the Middle East.
