Jewish War Veterans of the USA to Honor Congressman Bob Filner (D-CA) at Its Annual Congressional

Spring 2004

The Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV) is proud to present its 2004 Medal of Merit to Congressman Bob Filner (D-CA) at its annual Congressional Reception, Wednesday, Mar. 3, 2004. JWV's reception is held in conjunction with its Capitol Hill Action Day and precedes the testimony of National Commander Paul Bernstein at a joint session of the House and Senate Veterans' Affairs Committees on Thursday, Mar. 4, 2004. The JWV salutes Congressman Filner, the son of a member of our organization, for his years of dedicated service to the veterans' community. One of Bob Filner's early appointments upon arriving in Washington was to a seat on the Committee on Veterans' Affairs. In that capacity, Bob has been a tireless fighter for veterans, including Filipino veterans of WWII, many of whom have been denied the benefits which they had earned. Bob has fought to get attention to health problems affecting soldiers serving in Vietnam and the Gulf War. He has worked for more mental health care for veterans and to ensure that GI benefits keep up with inflation. He was successful in getting better pay for VA dentists and increasing small business opportunities for veterans. Bob's efforts were critical to the recent opening of a new 400-bed California Veterans Home in Chula Vista. Congressman Filner continues to fight for increases in veterans' health care funding, an end to concurrent receipt, increased aid for the aging widows of our veterans, a guarantee of jobs with government contractors working to rebuild Iraq, and increased space for VA cemeteries, among other causes for the benefit of the veterans community. For his continued dedication to the needs of veterans, the JWV is proud to present him with its highest honor, the 2004 Medal of Merit.
