Jewish War Veterans Condemns the Lapse in VBA Funds Due to the Federal Government Shutdown

Fall 2013

Jewish War Veterans of the USA (JWV) condemns the lapse in funds for the Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) due to the ongoing federal government shutdown. As of Monday, October 7 the carryover funding VBA was using to run its operations has run out. The inability of Congress to fulfill its commitment to run the government will now cause needless harm to veterans as VBA services are suspended.

As of Tuesday, October 8 services including the Education Call Center, educational and vocational counseling, outreach activities and programs will no longer be available, and Veterans Service Organization space in VBA facilities will be closed. In addition, due to the furloughing of Office of Information Technology employees, work on the Veterans Benefits Management System, a critical component in reducing the Department of Veterans Affairs’ (VA) large backlog of disability benefits claims, will cease.

VA has made great strides in closing the disability claims backlog, but with this irresponsible lapse in appropriations, the backlog will continue to grow, and it will hurt the veterans who are waiting for these funds. If the government continues to be shutdown, VA will exhaust its remaining mandatory funds by the end of the month, which could have catastrophic effects for the veterans who rely on VA to make ends meet.

It is time for Congress to come together and pass a continuing resolution and reopen the federal government before the impact on the men and women who have served the nation becomes too great.
