Subject: Action, Working together to fight anti-Semitism and protect the veteran
- Group called Veterans for Peace is holding meetings in Rockland and Westchester Counties in NY and various venues in CT to tell the public that Israel deliberately attached the USS Liberty despite official verdict on the incident to the contrary
- It is important that JWV members show up at these meetings wearing their caps to protest and overwhelm the group
- JWV has had success protesting other groups, such as Nazi sympathizers, in this manner
- During 11:00 AM Sunday Protestant service at Naval Academy Chapel, the American flag is dipped before the altar
- This is a violation of flag protocol, but protocol is not statutory, and the issue does not affect Jewish students at the Academy
- Although dipping should not be done, it was decided by group to not protest the practice
- A Jewish veteran has claimed that doctor and other personnel at VA hospital in Iowa have tried to convert him to Christianity
- He has gotten a new physician to treat him, and members of Jewish community have not been able to verify his allegations
- Group concluded that we do not have enough information on which committee could take further action
- Walter Stern, JWV Liaison to West Point, has informed us that 10 of the 17 Jewish students in the entering class are Orthodox, and, although they have requested kosher food, they have been able to get it. We have been told that it will take four months for the food to be delivered and that it would cost $10,000 for the food to be provided by others in the meantime
- Suggestions were made to contact other Jewish agencies, including the Orthodox Union, and Congressman Eliot Engel's office
- JWV is contacting Rabbi Robinson at the Jewish Welfare Board for further information on the issue
- Chabad Rabbi in Portland, Maine, has been accused of violating zoning laws by holding services in his home after neighbors' complaints about increased traffic in the neighborhood. He is being defended by Maine ACLU. A community issue - JWV is part of the community.
- California JWV members remain concerned about anti-Semitic activities at UC Irvine
- JWV should contact Israeli consulate, etc., for possible speakers to schedule at university to counteract anti-Semitism created by speakers from Muslim student group
- JWV would like to plan demonstrations but has had history of not being able to get other Jewish groups to join them
- JWV members throughout the country must inform National organization if there are other incidents that we should look into
