Subject: Responsibility of Post Officers
- As membership decreases, we need to do more as officers to keep JWV operating at a high level.
- Post Commanders need to lead by example, follow bylaws, principles of constitution, make sure that the other officers have the opportunity to get involved and move up the ladder.
- There are several types of Posts – the very active ones with many people, the average Post which is struggling to keep up with where it was a few years ago, and the Posts that are lucky to have 10 people on the rolls and really can’t do much.
- Recruiting Officers
- Posts have to keep communicating – without communication, no one will be willing to volunteer to be an officer.
- Current officers should supervise everyone and train subordinates for the next job upward.
- Training is key to having good officers.
- Delegating Work
- Frequently, 20 percent of the members end up doing 80 percent of the work.
- Past Post Commanders and officers should be there as guidance for new Post officers. There should be a support system in place.
- Conduct
- All officers should represent the organization in the best light possible and not let negative thoughts shine through.
- Dress appropriately.
- Always be on time – don’t be late. Be prepared.
- Be in good physical and mental health.
- Officers should be prepared and understand their responsibilities.
- If an officer knows that they will be unable to attend, they should prepare for that in advance and have the appropriate information ready for the meeting.
