Subject: Leadership at All Levels: Make sure your elected officials know of your concerns

  • Must go to local, state, and national legislators to let them know of concerns, especially mandatory funding and necessity for VA to increase services for returning veterans
  • Because this is an election year, elected officials are more likely to pay attention
  • Level of difficulty in reaching legislators varies widely
  • Must contact Senators to get additional support for new GI bill for education; currently are 51 Senators signed on to bill, but need 60
  • Should concentrate on state legislators since they will eventually be going to higher office
  • More Post members participate in hospital programs than any other kind
  • Leadership program would prepare people to take on Post leadership positions
  • Posts must have interesting programs and speakers at meetings to give people a reason to come and to interest them in taking on leadership roles
  • Telephone squad is effective in getting members out to various programs
  • Members of Allied Vets mission develop into strong advocates for Israel and also become more appreciative of the JWV
